- This is the 2021 Genesis G80, a redesigned version of the brand’s mid-size luxury sedan.
- Its styling looks very similar to the recently revealed GV80 SUV, and the two cars will share many components.
- The U.S. will get the new G80 this year.
Just on the heels of its new GV80 SUV, Genesis is now showing a new version of the closely related G80 sedan. These initial photos show a dramatic redesign for the luxury four-door, which will continue to occupy the mid-size position of the brand’s lineup between the G70 and G90.
The outgoing G80 initially started life as the second-generation Hyundai Genesis but was rebadged upon the creation of the stand-alone Genesis luxury brand. The new model looks like it will make a significant jump upmarket, as evidenced by its bold exterior styling that incorporates the Genesis brand’s signature pentagonal grille and similar headlights and taillights as the GV80. The interior also looks rich, with high-quality leather and wood and a large 14.5-inch central display screen.
We know that the G80 is underpinned by the same rear-wheel-drive platform as the GV80, and the two cars are likely to share engines. That means a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four with around 290 horsepower as standard, and a turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 with 375 horsepower as optional. Both engines should come standard with rear-wheel drive with all-wheel drive optional, and an eight-speed automatic will be used across the board.
As is the Genesis way, pricing will likely undercut rivals such as the BMW 5-series, Audi A6, and Mercedes E-class by a few thousand dollars. We’d guess a starting price just under $ 50,000 and a fully loaded price somewhere in the $ 60,000 range.
Genesis says it will share more details this month as the car prepares to go on sale in Korea. As for when we’ll see it, a Genesis spokesperson told C/D it is coming to the U.S. this year as a 2021 model, and we expect to see it follow the launch of the GV80 by a few months.
