Pyramid. Barrier Reef. British Baking Show. It’s easy to spot greatness when it’s right there in the name. Even when it’s not part of the branding, it’s often easy to identify because greatness by definition stands apart. Greatestness, on the other hand, gets sticky. Drag racers: Who’s greater, John Force or RuPaul? Greatness inspires nothing so much as debate. And while the concept evolves, making it difficult to pit yesterday’s champion against today’s, you can’t be the greatest of all time without having been the greatest in your own time. Our list of the most important cars ever built starts in 1955, when this magazine was founded as Sports Cars Illustrated and as the modern auto industry came of age.
