  • Tesla’s Full Self-Driving option is increasing in price by roughly $ 1000 worldwide on July 1, CEO Elon Musk announced on Twitter today.
  • No Tesla is currently truly a self-driving vehicle, but the company says that capability is coming by the end of 2020.
  • The FSD option currently is able to provide traffic light stopping, navigation on autopilot, Summon, and automatic lane changing capability to Teslas.

Today Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced via Twitter that the cost of the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) option will increase on July 1 by $ 1000. Musk has said before that FSD would increase in price instead of decrease as the company gets close to releasing actual self-driving capabilities. The reasoning is that new features added to the option justify the additional cost.

The choice of date isn’t surprising: back in April, in response to a tweet about the price going up, Musk said that the price would likely increase on July 1. During a quarterly earnings call, Musk announced that FSD would enable Teslas to drive autonomously by the end of the year and that the feature would be available as a subscription.

Despite its name, FSD’s features don’t currently support actual self-driving, but the capability is coming, according to Tesla. Right now the $ 7000 upgrade adds navigate on Autopilot, automatic lane change, auto park, Summon, and traffic light and stop sign control. One feature that’s slated to be introduced to the FSD package is Autosteer on city streets.

If owners decide not to purchase FSD, all Teslas get Autopilot, which includes adaptive cruise and Autosteer lane-centering capability.

For all of these features, Tesla warns customers: “The currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.”
