2021 Porsche 911 Gets Classic Targa 4 and 4S Treatment

  • Porsche has revealed the 2021 911 Targa 4 and 4S models and announced that the more powerful 4S model will be available with a seven-speed manual transmission.
  • The 992-generation Targa 4 and 4S are powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six that makes 379 horsepower in the Targa 4 and 443 hp in the Targa 4S.
  • Pricing starts at $ 120,650 for the Targa 4 and $ 136,550 for the more powerful Targa 4S. They’ll arrive in the U.S. later this year.

Porsche is starting to roll out the additional variants of the 992-generation 911. We’ve seen and driven the Turbo S and Turbo S cabriolet, and now the open-top Targa 4 and 4S models are on the way. The best part? The more powerful Targa 4S is now the third 992 model to be available with a seven-speed manual transmission at no extra charge (#SavetheManuals).

The 911 Targa 4 and 4S are distinguished by their retractable roof, which can be opened and closed in 19 seconds, and a fixed full-width Targa roll bar behind the seats, which comes standard in silver but can be ordered in black. Porsche says the 992’s Targa bar was adopted from the 991 generation, but it has been enhanced for the 992 model. The roof, however, is composed of two flat magnesium elements with sound-deadening materials within the fabrics. The upper part of the Targa’s windshield is equipped with a wind deflector, and in back, the glass is heated.

The 992 Targa 4 and 4S are both powered by the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six that’s found in the standard 911 Carrera and Carrera S. In the Targa 4, it pumps out 379 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque while the 4S model is increased to put out 443 ponies and 390 lb-ft—the same power difference between the Carrera and Carrera S. And the number 4 is in the name, meaning they both have standard all-wheel-drive and Porsche Traction Management (PTM). The PDK dual-clutch transmission is also standard on both models although a six-speed manual is available on the Targa 4S at no extra cost, which includes the Sport Chrono package.

Equipped with the PDK dual-clutch transmission and the Sport Chrono package, Porsche says, the Targa 4 will go from zero to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds flat and reach 179 mph. The more powerful Targa 4s, also equipped with the fast-shifting PDK and Sport Chrono package, will reach the same speed in 3.4 seconds and hit 188 mph, Porsche claims. However, during C/D testing, the 443-hp 911 Carrera S launched to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds flat.

The 992-generation Porsche 911 Targa 4 and 4S are available to order now and are expected to arrive later this year. There will also be a special-edition model debuting in June. Pricing starts at $ 120,650 for the Targa 4 and $ 136,550 for the more powerful Targa 4S.
