Winnebago’s Hike Camper Is an Affordable Trailer with an Exoskeleton

  • The Hike camping trailer from Winnebago offers novel exoskeleton construction that provides space for strapping down outdoor gear while on the move.
  • Five floor plans are offered, and all include a roadside slide-out for additional interior space when parked.
  • With a starting price of $ 27,513, the Hike is also a budget-friendly compact trailer.

While the whole country scrambles to rethink day-to-day life amid the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, many are taking to good old outdoor recreation to blow off steam. If you’re one of many Americans now looking to escape to the woods for a while to pursue activities such as kayaking, rock climbing, or fishing, the Winnebago Hike camper could be the overlanding trailer to take along on your next adventure.

The Hike comes in 20-foot-eight-inch and 25-foot floor plans, and with a starting price of $ 27,513, it is more than $ 18,000 cheaper than its shinier rival, the 20-foot Airstream Basecamp. Like the Basecamp, the Hike comes with a raised suspension, off-road tires, and heavy-duty fenders to help it tackle rutted roads and groomed trails better than lower-riding camping trailers with on-road tires.

But the Hike’s party piece is its powder-coated exoskeleton, which doubles as a handy rack for mounting bikes, kayaks, skis, and other gear. It’s compatible with a Thule-branded roof rack or, as Winnebago suggests, owners can get creative with bungee cords and clips.

Inside, all five of the Hike’s available floor plans include a roadside slide-out to increase interior space when parked. All models also boast a full bathroom with separate shower, a fixed bed, a dedicated dinette that converts to a secondary sleeping place, and a set of appliances that includes a microwave, refrigerator, and range. The two 25-foot models also offer an exterior cooktop and sink set that pulls out from the side of the camper, perfect for campsite cookouts.
